The last class of the 08/09 season was one of the best. Eli, the other instructor in the picture, and I got to ski with two longtime friends of ours, Per and Oli. For the past two years, Per and Oli have skied pretty exclusively with Eli and I. Per was with me in the older kids room and Oli was with Eli upstairs in the younger room. They're both fantastic skiers and in the past two years their skiing has improved by leaps and bounds. I think their genetics may have something to do with it...
The day before this class, we got a late season snow dump of 7", so the snow was fresh and everything lined up for us to make our last season class to be a trek up to the Highline ridge. Per and Oli had been begging for this and with their parent's approval and the approval of the JE1 supervisor, Kristi Vine, we headed out for our adventure.
After the hike up, we looked at the runs available to us and made our selection: we decided to cut between Fabian and Oster. The snow conditions and the fresh powder made for an awesome run and a great learning experience for Per and Oli on how to deal with steep terrain with a bit of heavy snow for speed control. We made a couple of stops to asses what had happened in the past couple of turns and what we could do to make our movements smoother and how we can better control our direction and speed. When we got to the bottom and looked up at what we just skied, I could tell that the boys were happy with their progress and what they had just accomplished with great form and control. Eli and I were thrilled that the boys had the skills and the nerves to get through one of the more intimidating runs on the Highline Ridge with such ease.
Keep your eyes out for these two. They're tough to miss with their solid form and constant improvement. Eli and I like to think that we played a large part of that, but only time will tell!
